Minneapolis based psychedelic band, Flavor Crystals, are really a national treasure. One of my favorite bands to come along in the last 15 years. They've been making brilliant, intelligent, psychy, dreamy, floaty, music since their debut, "On Plastic" in 2005. Beneath their ethereal beauty lies a raw power and intensity that few bands possess.
At the heart of the magic of the Flavor Crystals is lead singer and guitarist Josh Richardson. A more genuinely sweet and thoughtful guy you will never meet. His likability is palpable onstage, but as you watch him perform, there is an edge to his playing that makes you sit up and take notice. You get the feeling the music is cathartic for him, a way to exorcise all of his demons, or something to that effect.
This clip was taken from their set at Milwaukee Psych Fest V, back in 2017. MPF is a wonderful, intimate festival that has grown over it's 7 years to become a fest that attracts the best of the best in psych bands from the U.S. and all over the world. The success of the fest is due in large part to it's tireless director, Andrew James Shelp. Sadly this years festival will not take place for obvious reasons. This clip will give you a taste of what you can expect and hopefully will return next year!
