It got me thinking how important and influential John Peel was in the advancement and dissemination of cutting edge music and bands for so long. He basically introduced us to so many of our most cherished bands(Bowie, Roxy Music, T-Rex, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, The Cure, Gang of Four, Jesus & Mary Chain, and The Smiths just to name a few) especially during the punk and post punk eras, who knows where we'd be without him.
John Peel hosted his radio show in the U.K. on BBC 1 for almost 40 years starting in 1967, he passed away in 2004 at the too young age of 65. Aside from just DJing and playing records, he became known for his "Peel Sessions" He would record bands live in the BBC's studios and put them out as EP’s on his own Strange Fruit label.
Growing up in the late 70's, early 80's these Peel Sessions held so much meaning for me. I was a music obsessed kid thanks to my mom. She brought home all of these records when I was 10, 11, 12 years old. The Peel Sessions recordings were like a special extra treat from my fav bands. Gang of Four's debut record, Entertainment! was and still is one of my all time favs. When I discovered the GoF Peel Session it was a revelation. Just them playing live in a studio created this incredibly raw and visceral vibe, and added to my love for the band. The best bands and Peel Sessions didn't need studio effects to sound great, they could just plug in and create magic.
The vinyl Peel Sessions records are great collector's items, but having an alphabetized list of 1000 YouTube links that you can refer to is an awesome tool! Thanks again to Dave Strickson for putting this together!
