The psychedelic Welsh band, Super Furry Animals have always been brilliant and ahead of their time. Led by their visionary singer, Gruff Rhys, he of the heavenly voice and sharp witted lyrics; their music never disappoints in captivating the imagination.
I've seen them live many times. They've always been fantastic and charming in person. The first time was probably the most memorable. I was living in Barcelona, Spain in 1998, and they played a free concert down by the playa. My new friend Ange had seen them in the UK previously and knew them a bit. After the show we went to say hi and ask what they were up to.
At the time, I was living in an amazing flat in Placa Reial, a gorgeous square in the gothic quarter off the famed La Rambla, A tree-lined pedestrian street that goes all the way from the center of town to the Mediterranean Sea. My flat had a rooftop terrace with a view of Barcelona. I asked Gruff and the rest of the Super Furries if they wanted to come up for a glass a wine a spliff, and to our delight they accepted! We had an amazing time drinking and chatting the night away on my roof. One of the most memorable nights of my life!
Going through my archives recently I found some footage I shot of a SFA's show in Baltimore in 2002. I thought I'd share this track, The International Language of Screaming! I think we can all relate to feeling like we want to scream on a daily basis these days! La la la la la la la la la la....
